Red Dirt Skinners

The Red Dirt Skinners are a British musical group playing the "Red Dirt" music genre of music; the style is native to Oklahoma and Texas and takes influences from Country music, Folk, blues, Bluegrass, old time, Texas Country, Americana, Southern Rock and Honky tonk music. The term "Skinner" refers to the surname of the husband and wife duo.
In 2013, the Red Dirt Skinners became the first band in history 〔Weale, Darren. "Interview with the Red Dirt Skinners", ''Blues In Britain'', London, October 2013〕 to succeed at both the British Blues Awards (WINNER Instrumentalist of the Year 2014 (Runner Up 2013) 〔(List of winners and nominees at the British Blues Awards 2014 )〕) and the British Country Music Awards (Horizon Act of the year and People's Choice〔(List of Nominees at the British Country Music Awards 2013 )〕).
== History ==

The Red Dirt Skinners formed in 2011 but began under their current name after their marriage in May 2012. The duo consists of Rob and Sarah Skinner, both multi-instrumentalists originating from South East England
The Red Dirt Skinners unique sound can be attributed to Sarah’s wide experience playing classical, folk, ska, blues, jazz and everything in between, and for Rob’s equally diverse musical background as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Sarah began her musical career as a classical clarinetist at around the age of 6 and Rob grew up with many musical influences including a grandmother who taught piano.
Sarah and Rob met whilst playing in a Madness (band) tribute act in 2009. After a brief stint with a four piece Blues rock band, Sarah and Rob were encouraged to perform more of their own material during a chance meeting with Lisa Marie Presley at one of their shows. The couple began writing together in early 2011 and they released their debut album, Grass Roots, that Autumn.
Grass Roots was an instant hit with both blues and country fans. Maverick Magazine, on discovering that the duo were from the UK, described the Skinners as “Proof that the UK can rival points in Deep South America when it comes to Rootsy Country” 〔Cackett, Alan. “Home Sweet Home Review”, Maverick Magazine Kent, October 2012〕
A burglary at their home in March 2012 robbed them of the computers that housed 6 years worth of songwriting ideas. The couple found renewed inspiration for lyrics and brought out their second album, Home Sweet Home (October 2012) with songs entirely inspired by the events of the weekend of the burglary. Turning down several offers from labels in the UK and the USA, Home Sweet Home pulled at the heartstrings of the British public and received extensive positive press coverage. The track “Lay Me Down” was featured by Bob Harris (radio) on his Under The Apple Tree Sessions.
Spurred on by the support they received following the release of Home Sweet Home, Rob and Sarah began performing further afield and in April 2013 the duo performed their first European shows; many to sell out crowds. Their unique sound had begun causing audiences everywhere to describe them as "refreshingly different".
The public response to the Skinners was so positive that they self-released their third album using donations from their fanbase. Sinking The Mary Rose was released in October 2013. Gaining recognition from Oklahoma; the original home of Red Dirt (music), the Gospel blues single from the album, Stillwater, was a huge success, particularly amongst people of Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Sinking The Mary Rose received extremely positive feedback and brought them to the attention of the British Country Music Awards. The duo were placed as finalists at the BCMAs in the categories of “Best Newcomer” and “People’s choice”. 2013 also saw Sarah receive Runner Up position at the British Blues Awards in the “Instrumentalist of the Year” category.
In 2014, the Red Dirt Skinners were nominated again at the British Blues Awards, this time for Acoustic Act of the Year and Sarah again for Instrumentalist of the Year.
Sarah won the award for Instrumentalist of the Year, which brought the Skinners to the attention of Trevor James Saxophones who, in early 2015 endorsed Sarah as their first female artist.
On arriving at the Blue Lamp, Aberdeen, the Skinners made a last minute decision to record the show for a possible live album release. From this, their fourth album; Live In Aberdeen, was released in late 2014.
The Red Dirt Skinners genre-busting sound has led to them being the first band in history to succeed at both the British Blues Awards and the British Country Music Awards. The Red Dirt Skinners were also named in the top ten acts of 2014 by UK Country Radio. Receiving extensive worldwide airplay for all four of their albums, Sarah and Rob are currently writing their fifth album.
